Halve the onions and cut them into slices. Chop the garlic. Heat the butter, add the onions, garlic and caraway, add salt and stew over medium-low heat for approx. 30 minutes until the onions are golden brown.
Sprinkle the flour on the onions, blend with the vermouth and reduce. Add the thyme, bay leaf, broth and let the soup simmer over low heat for approx. 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, turn on the grill of the oven at 200 ° C. Spread the butter on the slices of bread, sprinkle them with cheese and season with pepper.
