With its flowers, red seeds and resistant skin, pomegranate is an unmistakable seasonal fruit. Famous for its antioxidant properties, this plant has no certain origins. Probably of Asian origin, the pomegranate is now grown in the Mediterranean areas of Asia and Europe. Indeed, it is probable that you have an ornamental plant in the garden too, in a sheltered position.
The pomegranate plant has, in fact, the appearance of a bush with long leaves and a height that can reach 4 meters. It grows in mild areas and the fruits, similar in shape to that of an apple, contain red pulp seeds. Just the autumn weeks are those of pomegranate harvest, therefore ideal for seasonal consumption. Let’s take a closer look at the pomegranate juice properties.
The pomegranate, or pomegranate, in recent years is increasingly present on our tables. And this can only be good for health, given its multiple properties. It is good to know, however, that there are several varieties and that the fruit is classified according to its acidity. But what are the most popular varieties?
As far as Italian crops are concerned, the pomegranate from Neirana, Selinunte, Dente di Cavallo and Ragana is famous. In addition to these, the varieties of Cesena, Tondo Verde, Gigante d’Albania and Gigante del Convento deserve to be mentioned. In general, we say that the main production areas in Italy are concentrated in Lazio, Sicily, Basilicata and Calabria.
Each fruit contains approximately 78% water, 4% fibre, 1.7% protein and 1.2% fat. In addition, it contains lower percentages of carbohydrates and minerals such as calcium, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, phosphorus and selenium.
The vitamin content is also important, with B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6), C, E, K and J. Phenols also make pomegranate fruit with powerful antioxidant qualities. Excellent also against free radicals, pomegranate has the advantage of being low in calories. 100g of fruit, in fact, corresponds approximately to 70 Kcal.
For its components, the consumption of pomegranate has various benefits for the body. It is, above all, known as an anticancer, gastroprotective, antibacterial and antifungal as well as an antioxidant. Active against premature aging of the tissues, this fruit also has astringent virtues and is therefore effective against gastric disorders.
In addition, it is an appetite stimulant and contributes to the increase of the immune system. The presence of fibers also helps to purify the body thanks to the stimulation of diuresis. But pomegranate is also known for its antidepressant properties: its juice, in fact, stimulates the serotonin receptors.
In addition to the virtues already mentioned, pomegranate has numerous other properties. This fruit, in fact, according to recent studies, would help in lowering the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. It is therefore an excellent ally in the prevention of heart disease. In addition, it is a natural anti-inflammatory and the essential fatty acids it contains promote cell regeneration.
Pomegranate would also have beneficial properties on Alzheimer’s symptoms. By taking it daily, in fact, it helps protect the body from harmful proteins. Even those who suffer from bone pain and arthritis can benefit from the consumption of pomegranate. Flavonoids, in fact, inhibit cartilage degeneration.
Lastly, know that pomegranate also has excellent properties for the skin. You can, for example, use its seeds as an exfoliant to eliminate dead cells. In addition, the antioxidants contained in the fruit protect against the damage of UVB rays helping in the prevention of dermatological diseases. Be careful, though, if you already have low blood pressure. The pomegranate, in fact, tends to lower it and if you take other drugs, you should consult your doctor.
